How to Survive an Anaconda Bite

I know that a lot of my readers are often being in a situation where they are likely to get bitten by anacondas. I sure am. This helpful video demonstrates how you can get your hand out if a friggin huge snake puts the chomps on you.

i'm off to nerd prom

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 8:42 PM

It's so weird to have this great week working on Criminal Minds that I can't talk about in any detail until October. I have no mouth, and I must scream, you could say. How about I just give up one little non-spoilery thing, and nobody tells on me, okay?

At the end of the shoot, I was thanking a lot of the people I worked with for making it such a great experience. Every single one of them told me that they wished I worked on the show every day. I guess the feeling was mutual.

So, yeah, that made me feel pretty good. If you get a chance to work on Criminal Minds, I highly recommend it.

Now, to business:

Tomorrow, I'm heading down to San Diego for an abbreviated stay at Comic-Con. Here's my schedule:

  • On Thursday, I'll be on a panel called Star Trek Without a Blueprint: How books and comics keep expanding the boundaries of the Star Trek universe. We'll be talking about the future of Star Trek publishing in room 32AB from 4:00-5:00. I'll be on the panel with Andy Mangels (moderator and Star Trek author), Margaret Clark (executive editor, Pocket Books), Andy Schmidt (senior editor, IDW) and Star Trek authors Kevin Dilmore, Dave Mack, Scott Tipton, and Dayton Ward.
  • The rest of the time, I'll be with my friend Rich Stevens at the Dumbrella booth, which is number 1335. MC Frontalot is going to be there, too, so if you're looking to fill that final square on Nerd Bingo, come and see us.

Oh. I guess it would be useful to know what I'm taking with me to sign and sell, wouldn't it?

In addition to some 8x10s from Star Trek and Stand By Me, I'll have copies of The Happiest Days of Our Lives , which I'm kind of hoping will sell out.

I'll have a few copies of Dancing Barefoot and Just A Geek. I'll also have a few copies of Volume 2 of the Star Trek Manga. I won't have any copies of Volume 3 of the Star Trek Manga, but it's just been released, so I'm sure you'll be able to pick up a copy somewhere. If you bring it to the booth, I'm happy to sign it for you.

Finally, I will have copies of this year's Chapbook, which is called Sunken Treasure. What's that, you say? You don't know what that is? You don't have time to click a link, you say? Well, my lazy friend, allow me to show you part of the author's note:

Every summer, I make one of these limited chapbooks and take them with me on the inevitable summer convention tour. In the past, I’ve pulled material from whatever I’m working on, as sort of a fall preview, but this year the book I’m working on is so top secret, I’d have to print the chapbook on self-destructing paper, and while that would make it a very limited edition, the costs associated are kind of prohibitive.

So for 2008’s limited edition chapbook extravaganza, I’ve put together the first ever Wil Wheaton Sampler. With the help of my editor Andrew, who is a former ninja warrior and recreational time traveler, I’ve pulled together things I like from all three of my books, my blog, and this groovy collaborative fiction project I play with called Ficlets. I’ve also included, for the first time anywhere, one of the scripts I wrote for a sketch comedy show at the ACME Comedy Theater.

I am really proud of Sunken Treasure, and I think Andrew (my friend and editor) and I came up with something really special. I only sold about a dozen of them at San Jose Super-Con (there really weren't that many people there this year) and since I'm not welcome at the Creation convention in Vegas, the only places you can get copies of it will be Comic-Con and PAX. I'm anxious to get these little books out into the wild, though, so I hope you'll tell everyone you know, for a grand total of 150 people (you guys can coordinate this, right?) to come by the Dumbrella booth and check it out. It's so weird to make something I'm so proud of, and only get to share it with a handful of people so far.

I don't know if I'll be particularly motivated to post while I'm away. I'll likely be posting all sorts of things to Twitter, including where I am and when I'll be signing. There will also be pithy observations about my fellow geeks, so you don't want to miss that. Erm, provided I can avoid the fail whale, that is. Ahem.

The Internet is quiet as hell lately. I feel like I'm talking into an empty tube, so thanks for reading and commenting; it makes me feel a little less like a crazy old man with no pants standing on the corner ranting about the weather.

i am trapped in a finance review session and since i have reached the end of the internet for today, i shall write something.

at the moment, i can look forward to this term ending at the end of the month. after this session, i have another group meeting and the final presentation for that class tomorrow. when i have a break from classes i don't know what to do with myself anymore. i've added an extra disc to my netflix account in preparation.

nivan is moving away and jen and i decided that anshita will be loose it. i've predicted that when he is up in san francisco, she'll call and then he'll ignore her for a day or so and then she'll destroy her cell phone. i expect at least 2 to 3 cell phones will be lost in the upcoming months.

Licking your wound

It turns out that licking and sucking on a guy's finger after he nicked his finger while cutting the ingredients for cooking isn't only hot, but good for the wound healing.

This is one of those days where I want to do about fifty bazillion things at once, including go for a bike ride, lift weights, drink, dance, sing, write an epic poem, fly across the ocean, fuck, go bowling, finish the remaining tournament website work, or just drop everything, start walking, and never stop.

Bless Mariah Carey. She so wants us to believe this is effortless casualwear -- like she was out buying Lemon Pledge and Swiffer wipes and decided to pop by TRL just to say hi.

It's all very PTA Car Wash Barbie. Does that make Nick Cannon her Ken? It would at least explain the shocking -- SHOCKING! -- rumors of discord in their storied union. I wonder if "anatomically incorrect" is covered under "irreconcilable differences."

A trip down memory lane

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 2:52 PM

While looking for a picture for my dad, I came across this gem that shows just what a pretty little girl I was at age 12. This is why I keep my hair short now.

My new office is awesome. It's all quiet and windowless and has room for me to hang my Giger above my desk. Plus, the office decorations in this building make me smile. I've seen three Jolly Rogers, several Spinal Tap quotes on people's whiteboards, and one note proclaiming that the inhabitant of the cube an "immolation assassin." I think I can live with this.

Fug or Fab: Christina Hendricks

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 7:01 PM
Like so many people, I LOVE Christina Hendricks as sassy Joan on Mad Men, who has men and women alike smitten by her curvy charms. She looks terrific on the show, with her bold red lipstick and flaming hair, and so I always desperately want to love what she's wearing off-set -- I mean, I've got hips, I've got a touch of the strawberry in my hair, and I'm a fair-skinned wench. I could take pointers, right?

Or maybe not.

On one hand, the concept of the dress is interesting, with the sparklies and the pleats, and having a fan pinned to your boobs is kind of like built-in air-conditioning. On the other, I don't think it was such a hot idea to match the burnt-orange color to her hair AND her eye-shadow, because it just makes her look kind of puffy-eyed and tired. Plus, that dress is just BEGGING for some idiot at the party to spend the night tugging on the pleated panel to see if it makes the fan swing back and forth.

July 23rd, 2008: I forgot to mention that yesterday, July 22nd, was Pi Approximation Day! Today is Approximately Pi Approximation Day, however, so today you can just sort of rub pie around your face with a much greater margin of error. Math holidays, cats and kittens!

I am a great business man if I mention I made a totally sweet shirt out of the Pi Approximation Day comic!

My sister ([info]anniemall, her husband [info]filmbuffjim, and Shane [info]zexenshad are spending the next 4 days together at ComicCon. I told them to get as much swag as they can from any Joss Whedon event (possibly get pictures, possibly get autographs, etc). They're going to have a good time. San Diego is always a good place to go to at any time of the year.

My Lich King beta finished downloading at some point during the night. I was awakened by extremely loud music from my computer. I was not anticipating this (though I should have). When I got up this morning, I installed it. I had copied my 2 level 70 characters to the test realm, so it was nice to see them already there. Right before I left for work, I created a Death Knight and stayed long enough to see the intro. I liked it! Best voice-over intro this far.

Tonight, i'll get to play around more with it. I'm definitely excited. Aaaaaanyway... time to pass out at work.

Fug or Fab the Cover: Kyra Sedgwick

We have gotten A LOT of emails about this cover, to the point that I expected to see Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson here with tentacles coming out of her hair and a handlebar mustache. And while this is certainly not that bad, she does seem to have a rollicking case of Dead Eyes and Forehead Photoshoppery, which is a serious and very real crime. (In fairness, she does look very pretty inside on the inside of the magazine. This might also be a good time to point out that I covet her hair. ) So what say you?
I like to think of this look as Lazy Phoebe Price:

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for 82040454.jpgThumbnail image for 82040442.jpg

Like, she's finagled her way into attending something, somehow, without having to threaten to sue but it's been a long week already and she's feeling bloated. Surely, this is not the time for skin-tight mermaid gowns or zebra-print catsuits. It's time for a bag. But...bags aren't very PHOEBE PRICE. A girl in a stripy maxi-bag doesn't prompt questions like, "who IS Phoebe Price and where are her pants?" HENCE: A giant, random slit up the side, the better to aggressively poke her gams through. Also, a stupid hat and a side ponytail. Close enough!

an update on Ben

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 9:38 AM
Herro everyone. I haven't done one of these in a while. Nothing too exciting going in my life right now. I've been kind of laying low evaluating things since my niece was born, but I'm ready to get back in the swing of things (with a few changes of course).

Life in Oakland is kind of cool I guess. I'm not being as social and going out as much as I fantasized about when I moved here. But in life, if you want something, you have to make it happen, it's not going to come to you. I'm also realizing going out and being a party animal is not something I'm into anymore. After a few regretful nights and evaluation of finances, I've decided to cut my trips to the city to an extreme minimum. My expenditures on alcohol/partying in June were more than I spent on gas for my car that month. Not cool. There are other ways to meet people, hang out, and be social.

Life in the dating arena is ..... very interesting (yes the long pause was intentional). There's a lot of stuff that I've been evaluating there as well (I'm being intentionally cryptic btw, I apologize I'm not spilling many details here). There are a few promising prospects, and I'm asking them to be patient with me while I figure things out and get grounded again.

Anyway, overall life is really good, I'm happy and staying positive and upbeat. Mostly I've just been reading, playing my Xbox 360, going to the gym, or spending time with my family. I'm totally looking forward to my housewarming party on the 2nd and seeing a lot of you. Btw, if you're on my journal, weren't invited, and want to make the trip to Oakland to meet some great people, I'd love to meet you, drop me a line! :-)

Photos of the Abandoned Mike Tyson Mansion

I guess Mike Tyson used to have a pretty crazy mansion in Ohio, but it now sits there abandoned. Some dude sneaked in and took a bunch of pictures. The thing is pretty crazy! Dude had tiger cages, for one thing.

This Entry Took Millenia To Type, Goddammit

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 8:40 AM

I'm rolling in happiness today, mostly due to a spate of good news which I'll detail here in bullet form;

* I gots me a job! Well, the wonderful [info]rambleman helped gets me a job. He had two going at his place of work (a book publishing company) which I applied for, but apparently there was fierce internal competition for those so I didn't really stand a chance. However, there was also a temp position (3.5 months) going which they contacted me about, and yesterday I interviewed for it. Apparently, the key to getting work in America is to not blog about it until you get it, and yesterday afternoon I got the call. It was one of my best interviews yet; I was calm, collected, and most of all, I was myself. The people there are lovely, the location is great, the pay is rather good comparatively, and I get to work with Jef. There's even a possibility of it becoming permanent, but I can't expect that. I'm both exhilarated (what with my troubles getting work here in the past two years), and nervous (my professional confidence is in the lavvy), but truly it is an incredible thing. I start next week.

* I LOVE our apartment, and especially our area. The neighbours are lovely, there are trees everywhere, and we're walking/riding around rather than driving. We're a 10-15 minute bike from Trader Joes (LAHVE!), we have a movie cinema down the street, and a farmer's market, we're near the train stations, friends, and a whole bunch of other cool stuff like second hand book and music stores and comic shops, etc. We truly couldn't have picked a better area for us. Thank you to everyone who advised us on this.

* I'd write a review about how amazing The Dark Knight was, but this laptop is too shitty for the typing. Plus, you probably all know by now. But if you don't, it was freaking incredible, and not just from the stance of a comic book nerd (although that helps - this film really caters for the fandom). Another amazing film I saw recently and wanted to review here but couldn't due to the immense frustration of trying to type legibly on this damned laptop is Funny Games (the American version - I still need to see the original, but it's by the same writer/director, and apparently a scene for scene remake) - truly one of the most brilliant, terrifying and disturbing films I'll ever see - a callous, brutal social commentary on the casual cruelty of film violence (or, torture porn). Pitt, Roth and (especially) Watts blew my mind - three actors I rather enjoy in the worst of times. Absolutely horrid, you'll both love and hate it (although I wouldn't recommend it as much for those who love/have kids and are a bit sensitive about such things).I also saw The Signal, which was half horror, half comedy, and all good - many people I know will really appreciate this ambitious and graphic (sometimes cringe worthy) independent film. Soon, Hellboy 2 - typically it would be at the top of my cinema-going list, being such a Hellboy nutcase, but...there was Batman. And holy shit, was there Batman. I wanna see it a million times (and I probably will). Seriously the best comic book adaptation, ever - they went back to the source, bless 'em. O, and did you know that Wes Anderson is making a film of my very favourite childhood Roald Dahl book?! He is! Lots of exciting film coming out of our ears in the near future...

* Squirrels! Everywhere! Fucking squirrels! And not the timid buggers you find in the towns, but fat, evil, beady-eyed pooping garbage monkeys that eat everything, even little plastic Draculas you accidentally leave on your porch! I thought we had two resident squirrels - Fay Boy (a plump, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed pretty boy) and Gag Hag (his one-eyed, mean n' manky girlfriend) - but there are millions of them swarming about eating McDonalds outta trash cans. Chicago does have one thing against it, and that is an overwhelming amount of trash. Hence we have the apartment block dumpster right next to our deck (a trade-off for having a great deck), but it's nowhere near as bad as I'd anticipated. Just rats, and squirrels. Let's hope not for a resurgence of the Black Death, eh?

This town is nowhere near perfect, but I love it, and it's home. I have a little sadness today, too, but that's something I have to keep to myself.
